Background

The Smart Cities Challenge is a competition open to all municipalities, local or regional governments, and Indigenous communities (First Nations, Inuit, and Métis) across Canada. The Challenge empowers communities across the country to address local issues their residents face through new partnerships, using a smart cities approach. A smart cities approach is about achieving meaningful outcomes for residents through the use of data and connected technology. This approach can be adopted by any community, big or small.

The City of Richmond is now asking community members to answer some questions that will help us complete the final proposal to Infrastructure Canada.

Richmond's Smart Cities proposal

The City of Richmond asked residents in March to April 2018 to vote on categories to focus on for our Smart Cities challenge statement and to share their ideas under the categories. The majority of respondents chose, in this order:

1. safety and security
2. mobility

The City of Richmond has incorporated the most popular ideas into a proposal that led to Richmond becoming one of 10 finalists in the Smart Cities Challenge.

The four project outcomes for the City of Richmond’s submission are:

• Protect an Island City
• Create scalable mobility systems
• Integrate emergency communication platforms
• Bridge language barriers
