    Thank you for your inquiry.

The multi-use pathway project on Sea Island is part of YVR jurisdiction, therefore, it would be best to reach out to YVR staff to receive an update on project completion. General YVR inquiries regarding active transportation projects can be sent to customercallcentre@yvr.ca

City parks aim to provide safe, welcoming, and comfortable spaces for all members of the public; while dogs and dog owners represent one user group, a balance must be struck between their needs and those of the broader community. There are many people who are not dog owners or lovers, and who may be fearful of them to the point that it affects their sense of comfort and security. Similarly, many dogs are not particularly social, and some may exhibit aggressive behaviour when provoked by an unanticipated, negative interaction (with humans or other dogs). All of which underlines a need for both controlled environments and quiet places of respite.

City parks also aim to enhance our natural environment by providing ecosystem services and habitat areas for flora and fauna. In some cases, it is possible for these spaces and dogs to coexist; in others, dog activity can be detrimental to sensitive plants and wildlife. Outside of designated off-leash areas, requiring dogs to be on a leash and under the control of their owners reduces the potential for negative impacts on flora and fauna. In some City parks, for example those with more established natural areas, it is necessary to restrict the presence of dogs altogether.

The City will be seeking to develop a citywide dog off-leash strategy as part of its forthcoming Parks and Open Space Strategy update. This is anticipated to expand upon existing policies, best practices, design and planning considerations, and identify gaps in the existing dog off-leash area network.

    Thank you for your suggestion.

In December 2023, Council endorsed the Sports Facility Needs Assessment Report. This study has identified a synthetic turf multi-sport field including lighting as one of the six priority projects. Further detailed planning and analysis will be required for each project to move forward. Following planning and analysis, city staff will bring the projects to Council for consideration through the capital submission process. For more information on the Sports Facility Needs Assessment Report, please refer to https://citycouncil.richmond.ca/__shared/assets/2_-_Sports_Facility_Needs_Assessment_-_Community_Association_and_Society70790.pdf

Thanks very much for your inquiry and comments.

McLean Neighbourhood Park is among our top ranked priorities in the citywide Playground Replacement Program and we anticipate beginning the planning and design process in 2024 with implementation in 2025. We do not typically have gated enclosures around our public playgrounds in order to create a seamless interface with the surrounding park and avoid impeding access for users. Through the planning and design process we will explore and develop specific approaches that prioritize universal accessibility and meet all applicable safety standards.
