    Thank you for your question.
    The City’s Official Community Plan identifies Steveston Highway between No. 6 Road and the West Dyke as a planned major street bike route.  The City has developed a phased approach to implement a significant portion of the route with the Steveston Highway MUP having committed funding as part of the 2019, 2020, and 2021 capital programs:


    • Phase 1 – Shell Road to Mortfield Gate
    • Phase 2 – Mortfield Gate to No 2 Road
    • Phase 3 – No 2 Road to Railway Avenue

    Enhanced crossing opportunities and extension of the bike route east and west beyond these current end points will be considered in future capital programs and as development opportunities occur.

    Thank you for your question. We replied to a similar question on the Transportation project page and are happy to share the information with you here as well.

    Channelized islands are found to be a significant contributor to collisions at intersections in the city.  The proposed projects will improve overall intersection traffic safety by reducing the speed of right-turning vehicles, improving sightlines of pedestrians and cyclists, and increasing the amount of road space for pedestrians/cyclists.  This enhances the road environment for more sustainable modes of travel including walking and cycling, which is aligned with the City's vision and plans.

    With respect to No. 2 Road-Westminster Highway, the project is in the design phase to determine the exact scope of removal/modification of the island.  The description of the project has been revised accordingly.
