South Dike Upgrades 2023

Background:

At an average of one metre above sea level, Richmond faces flood hazards from sea level rise due to climate change, coastal storm surges, snowmelt flooding and extreme weather events. The City of Richmond recognizes this risk and is currently advancing the Dike Master Plan with proposed upgrades for the South Dike portion, from 6080 Dyke Road to the Gilbert Road South Pump Station.

The South Dike Upgrade project includes approximately 850 metres of dike raising:

• 180 metres will be raised to an elevation of 4.1 metres
• 670 metres will be raised to an elevation of 4.7 metres, with proposed designs made to allow the City to further raise this section of the dike to an elevation of 5.5 metres in the future

The South Dike will eventually be connected to the future Steveston Island Dike. Once the Steveston Island Dike is complete, it will be the primary dike in the area, with the current Lulu Island Perimeter Dike as a secondary dike system.

Residents and businesses of the London Landing neighbourhood are invited to review concept designs found in the Document Library and provide feedback on potential features.

Here's how you can get involved:

• Review the information in the Document Library on the right side of this webpage, which includes boards outlining the South Dike Project and the Steveston Island Preliminary Dike Design.
• Complete the online survey below to suggest potential features that would benefit residents and businesses of the community. The survey closes at 11:59pm on Sunday, February 4, 2024.
• Attend a drop-in style open house on Wednesday, December 13 from 4:00 to 8:00pm at Steveston Community Centre, 4111 Moncton Street. City staff will be available to discuss the South Dike Upgrades and answer questions. Kids are welcome to enjoy activities in the Kids Corner.
